1. Why Teak (Sagwan) is the Undisputed King of Wood

Known as Sagwan or Saag in Hindi and Teko in Konkani, Teak (Tectona grandis) has reigned supreme in Indian architecture and royal shipbuilding for over two millennia. What sets teak apart from every other timber species on Earth is its unique bio-chemical composition:

  • Natural Oleoresins: Teak wood fibers are saturated with natural rubber-like resins and aromatic oils that never fully evaporate. These oils act as a permanent internal waterproofing shield, preventing moisture absorption even during continuous monsoon lashing.
  • Microscopic Silica Crystals: The tree extracts high concentrations of amorphous silica from the soil, embedding glass-like microscopic particles into the cell walls. This naturally dulls the mandibles of termites and prevents marine borer worms from tunneling.
  • Self-Lubricating Density: Because of its natural oils, teak does not corrode steel screws or brass hinges; instead, it preserves them for decades without rust binding.

2. Major Teak Origins: Burma vs CP vs Nilambur vs African

All teak belongs to the same botanical species, but soil minerals, annual rainfall, and tree maturity produce drastically different timber characteristics:

The Primary Teak Classifications:

  • Burma Golden Teak (Myanmar): Old-growth timber from mature forests (70–100+ years). Tight annual growth rings (15+ rings per inch), supreme oil content, rich golden honey color, and minimal knots. The highest quality teak in existence.
  • Central Province (CP / MP) Teak: Harvested from the dry, rocky soils of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra (Nagpur, Betul, Seoni). Slower growth yields an exceptionally dense, heavy wood with tight grains and dark, dramatic chocolate-brown streaks.
  • Nilambur (Malabar) Teak: Grown in the fertile, rain-drenched Western Ghats of Kerala. Home to the world's oldest planted teak forests. Prized for its warm golden-yellow luster, exceptional straightness, and large log girths.
  • African & South American Plantation Teak: Harvested from fast-growth commercial plantations (Ghana, Sudan, Ivory Coast, Brazil) on a 15 to 25 year rotation. Has wider growth rings, lower natural oil density, lighter color, and significantly more pale sapwood.

3. How to Detect Heartwood vs Sapwood Fraud

The single most common malpractice in custom carpentry is mixing cheap, pale sapwood into furniture while charging the client for 100% pure heartwood.

The Golden Rule: The outer ring of the log (the living sapwood) is pale white or light straw-yellow. It contains zero natural protective oils, has zero termite resistance, and attracts powder-post wood borers within months. Unscrupulous contractors use chemical wood stains to dye the white sapwood brown to match the heartwood before polishing.

The Mistri Inspection Tip: Inspect your furniture lumber in its raw, unpolished, freshly planed state. True teak heartwood is uniformly golden-brown with dark oil streaks. Reject any component showing white or light-yellow bands along the edges.

4. Commercial Timber Depot Grading: Grade A, B & C

When purchasing raw teak logs or sawn planks at Indian government timber auctions and private lumber yards, wood is classified into three commercial grades:

  • Grade A (Premium Heartwood): Sawn exclusively from the center heart of mature logs. Completely knot-free, zero sapwood, straight parallel grain, high natural oil sheen. Used for grand main doors, fine dining tables, and luxury yachts.
  • Grade B (Standard Heartwood): Mature heartwood with occasional sound pin knots and slight grain waving. Contains less than 5% sapwood on hidden faces. Excellent for bed frames, sofa frames, and internal door stiles.
  • Grade C (Commercial / Plantation): Younger timber with frequent dead knots, wider grain spacing, and up to 25% pale sapwood. Primarily used for concealed framing, internal battening, and budget residential doors.

5. Demystifying the CFT (Cubic Feet) Price & Calculation

Raw solid timber in India is bought and sold by volume in Cubic Feet (CFT). One CFT equals a solid block of wood measuring 1 foot wide, 1 foot high, and 1 foot long (1,728 cubic inches).

The Sawn Lumber CFT Formula:

CFT = [ Length (feet) × Width (inches) × Thickness (inches) ] ÷ 144

Example: A standard main door chaukhat jamb measuring 7 feet long, 5 inches wide, and 3 inches thick equals: (7 × 5 × 3) ÷ 144 = 0.729 CFT. If Grade-A CP Teak costs ₹4,500/CFT, that single raw timber piece costs ₹3,280 before saw cutting, wastage, and labor.

6. Teak Wood Species & Pricing Comparison Matrix

Compare the oil density, grain character, and market rates across the primary teak varieties:

Teak Variety Country / Region Grain Density & Rings/Inch Natural Oil Content Indicative Rate (₹ / CFT) Best Architectural Application
Burma Golden Teak Myanmar (Old growth) 14 – 20 rings/inch (Ultra tight) Very High (Waxy sheen) ₹6,500 – ₹12,000+ Luxury heritage main doors, yacht decks, master dining tables
CP / MP Teak Madhya Pradesh / Nagpur 10 – 14 rings/inch (Dense) High (Dark mineral streaks) ₹3,500 – ₹5,500 Carved entrance doors, solid wood bed frames, structural chaukhats
Nilambur Teak Kerala (Malabar Coast) 10 – 12 rings/inch (Straight) High (Warm golden hue) ₹4,000 – ₹6,000 Architectural timber columns, temple woodwork, large tabletops
African Plantation Ghana, Ivory Coast, Sudan 5 – 8 rings/inch (Wider grain) Moderate ₹1,800 – ₹3,200 Interior door sashes, window frames, commercial office furniture

Frequently Asked Questions

How can a homeowner identify genuine Teak wood from cheap lookalikes?

Genuine Teak has three distinct sensory signatures: (1) Scent: It emits a distinct, pleasant, leather-like aroma from natural tectoquinones; (2) Texture: Raw sanded teak feels naturally waxy and oily to the touch due to internal oleoresins; (3) Grain: It exhibits straight, tightly spaced golden-brown growth rings with dark mineral streaks and a natural golden sheen that darkens over time.

What is the difference between Heartwood and Sapwood in raw teak lumber?

Heartwood is the mature, dead inner core of the tree trunk: it is rich golden-brown, packed with natural preservative oils and silica, and 100% immune to termites and decay. Sapwood is the living outer ring beneath the bark: it is pale yellowish-white, soft, lacks natural oils, and is highly prone to powder-post wood borers. Premium teak furniture must be crafted exclusively from heartwood with 0% sapwood.

Why is Burma Teak priced much higher than plantation African Teak?

Burma Teak originates from old-growth virgin natural forests in Myanmar, where trees grew slowly over 60 to 100+ years. This results in ultra-dense annual growth rings, supreme oil content, and unmatched weather resistance. African teak is harvested from fast-grown plantation crops after only 15 to 25 years, resulting in wider growth rings, lower natural oil content, and higher sapwood proportion.

What is the current price range per Cubic Foot (CFT) for genuine Teak in India?

As of 2026, raw seasoned Teak lumber prices vary significantly based on origin and cut: Plantation African Teak ranges from ₹1,800 to ₹3,200 per CFT; Indian CP (Nagpur / Betul) Teak ranges from ₹3,500 to ₹5,500 per CFT; and genuine imported Grade-A Burma Teak ranges from ₹6,500 to ₹12,000+ per CFT.
